Chopped down in defeat
Rivera lost to Pedro Munhoz via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Clearly Rivera's training camp didn't include enough practice on checking leg kicks. It would have been nice to see what Jimmie could have done in this fight with a pair of working lower limbs, but Munhoz targeted his lead leg early and often in Round 1, and it left Rivera seriously compromised for the remainder of the fight. Quite honestly, Rivera deserves credit for seeing the final bell considering the shape he was in. Rivera has extremely fast hands and is an excellent boxer, but his offense is rather one-dimensional, and that dimension is difficult to execute on one leg. Rivera is questionably one of the better bantamweights on the UFC roster, but you are what your record says you are in this sport, and Rivera's record shows 1-3 in his past four fights dating back to February 2019. To say the New Jersey native needs a victory his next time out would be a massive understatement. On the bright side, he'll walk away from this one with a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus.
