Joins ONE Championship
Alvarez signed a contract to join ONE Championship on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The last fight on Alvarez's contract with the UFC ended in defeat during UFC on FOX 30 in late July at the hands of Dustin Poirier and it was immediately assumed that UFC would retain his rights. However, ONE stepped in and apparently presented the 34-year-old with an enticing offer as they build up brand recognition across the professional landscape of combat sports. Alvarez instantly becomes one of the premier fighters under the ONE banner as everyone awaits his first scheduled match.

Finished by Dustin Poirier in final fight of UFC contract
Alvarez lost to Dustin Poirier via TKO (strikes) at 4:05 of Round 2 at UFC on FOX 30 on Saturday in Calgary.
ANALYSIS
This matchup lived up to all the hype and then some. Alvarez is going to be kicking himself for multiple reasons. First of all, he had Poirier in a deep, deep choke early in Round 2 and was unable to finish the fight. Afterwards, he clocked Poirier with an illegal "12-6" elbow at which point referee Marc Goddard (correctly) stood both men up. Once the two men returned to the center of the cage, Poirier unloaded with power shots and Alvarez was unable to survive. Eddie ate at least two dozen shots that would have finished any mere mortal prior to the stoppage. His ability to absorb punishment is truly insane. ESPN's Ariel Helwani revealed that this was the last fight on Alvarez's UFC contract. It's nearly impossible to believe that the company won't make a lucrative offer for him to return, but stranger things have happened in this spot.

ANALYSIS
The two lightweight contenders are set for a rematch. They previously fought last may at UFC 211. However, the match came to an unusual end, with Alvarez connecting illegal knees to the head of a downed Poirer. As a result, the bout was declared a no-contest.

Digs deep, ends Justin Gaethje's undefeated streak
Alvarez defeated Justin Gaethje via TKO (knee) at 3:59 of Round 3 at UFC 218 on Saturday in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
It will certainly go down as one of the most rewarding victories of Alvarez's career. Fighting on one leg and with his right cheek swollen to the size of a softball, Alvarez connected with a huge knee in the center of the Octagon that dropped Gaethje and forced referee Herb Dean to step in and end the fight. Alvarez still has issues with leg kicks from his opponents, but he fought an intelligent fight. While he engaged his opponent in the brawl that he was looking for, Alvarez was smart about it. He displayed way more head movement then Gaethje and as a result absorbed far less damage. In fact, Alvarez landed 162 total strikes compared to 124 from Gaethje. A fight between two of the toughest human beings on the planet lived up to the billing. Alvarez and Gaethje took home $50,000 co-Fight of the Night bonuses for their efforts.

To face Justin Gaethje at UFC 218
Alvarez will face Justin Gaethje in a lightweight fight at UFC 218 on December 2 in Detroit, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez and Gaethje are coaching against one another on the 26th season of The Ultimate Fighter, and as expected, the two are set to fight after the series concludes Dec. 1. Both fighters are highly regarded wrestlers, but Gaethje has yet to put it on full display in a sanctioned MMA event, so Alvarez should have the slight edge heading into the contest. The 33-year-old has a 28-5 overall record in 34 professional fights and will be looking for his first win since taking the lightweight championship in July of 2016.
