Drops tight one in Vegas
Kenney lost to Dominick Cruz via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 27-30) at UFC 259 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was a fairly strong showing from Kenney in the most high-profile fight of his career. He was solid in Round 1 and excellent in Round 2 before fading just a tad in Round 3. Kenney made a concerted effort to damage the legs of Cruz, which is harder than it seems given Dom's legendary footwork. Kenney appeared baffled at times by the constant movement of Cruz, but by and large did a decent job of solving the riddle that is the former WEC/UFC champion. A long time member of the LFA roster, Kenney is now 5-2 in his first seven UFC bouts. It would be nice if he offered a bit more in terms of knockout power, but Kenney is excellent on the mat in addition to having never been knocked out in his professional career. The soon-to-be 30-year-old Indiana native will be back in short order.

With the fight seemingly up for grabs in the later stages, Kenney connected on a pair of clutch takedowns to secure the victory. A member of the UFC roster since March 2019, Kenney is now 5-1 with the company, with his only loss during that span coming against rising star Merab Dvalishvili. He'll also take home $50,000 for his efforts here, as this matchup was awarded Fight of the Night honors.
