Injury leads to main event defeat
FlyweightUFC
June 15, 2024
Perez lost to Tatsuro Taira via TKO (injury) at 2:59 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Fighting in his second main event in exactly six weeks, Perez was doing fairly well until the injury. Entering as a +195 underdog against an undefeated top prospect, Alex tried to remain aggressive, as a technical outing would massively favor his opponent. The two fought on even terms until Taira went for a takedown early in Round 2. He eventually got Perez's back while the two were standing and Alex appeared to injure his knee on the way to the ground. Referee Herb Dean immediately called off the fight. We'll have to wait on word of the severity, but Perez was in obvious pain. The 32-year-old falls to 1-4 in his past five fights, which is just as concerning as the injury.

Perez is scheduled to compete against Tagir Ulanbekov in a flyweight fight at UFC Vegas 93 on June 15, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Perez was initially expected to fight Ulanbekov before the former replaced Manel Kape for the main event of UFC Vegas 91. Perez came up big then, knocking out Matheus Nicolau in two rounds. While Perez is healthy and has his momentum hot, he will look to keep it going by taking on the Ulanbekov that was scheduled before the Nicolau fight.
Pulls late-notice main event upset

April 27, 2024
Perez defeated Matheus Nicolau via KO (punches) at 2:16 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 55 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Now 32 years of age and the loser of three fights in a row, Perez agreed to accept this fight on short notice knowing full well he would likely be handed his walking papers if he came up short. Instead, he put forth one of his best performances in recent memory. Perez looked calm and comfortable throughout. His picked his shots on the feet and got out of range before his opponent could return fire. The end result was a potential-career saving result for the California native, as well as a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. Perez is an aging fighter in a young man's division, and that is going to make it difficult for him to go on any sort of run moving forward, but he's going to get another chance with the UFC after upsetting Nicolau.
Steps in to face Nicolau

Perez won't be fighting against Tagir Ulanbekov and will replace Manel Kape in the bout against Matheus Nicolau on April 27 in the main event of UFC Vegas 91, Danny Segura and Nolan King of MMA Junkie report.
ANALYSIS
Perez has been struggling in recent years, but this might be the fight where he gets his career back on track. The veteran owns a 24-8 record in MMA and 6-4 at the UFC level, but he's also on a three-fight losing streak following his defeat by unanimous decision against Muhammad Mokaev in March. His last win came in 2020.

March 21, 2024
Perez is scheduled to compete against Tagir Ulanbekov in a flyweight fight for the UFC's June 15 event at Las Vegas, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
This is the first fight announced for the UFC's June 15 Vegas card, now featuring Perez trying to defend his top-10 flyweight ranking. He has not found any luck since losing to Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 255 back in November 2020. Multiple losses and fight withdrawals have Perez's once-promising flyweight career on a downward slope.
