Struggles continue in Vegas
WelterweightUFC
October 12, 2024
Morono lost to Daniel Rodriguez via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It's difficult to know what judges are looking for when they score a fight, but the numbers suggest Morono was fortunate to emerge with even a split decision defeat here. He was fine in Round 1, winning the frame on all three scorecards, but found himself on the short end of a 98-43 count in terms of total strikes landed over the course of the final 10 minutes. Rodriguez also landed a takedown during that stretch. The 34-year-old Texan has faded in a major way of late, dropping three of four dating back to October 2023.

Folds under pressure in Newark

June 1, 2024
Morono lost to Niko Price via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC 302 on Saturday in Newark.
ANALYSIS
Morono came out looking to bounce on his toes and throw big shots, but the unrelenting pressure and grappling of Price was simply too much, leaving Morono gasping for breath by the end of Round 1. "The Great White" took this fight on about a month's notice, but even with the incredible pressure of Price, it was surprising to see him lose his gas tank to such an extent. Morono has the BJJ skills to wing heavy punches without fear of going to the ground, but he needs more depth in his striking game if he wants to avoid hitting the occasional wall. Morono falls to 24-10 in professional MMA due to the loss.
Gets right back in win column
WelterweightUFC
April 6, 2024
Morono defeated Court McGee via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Fresh off a woeful performance in a unanimous decision loss to Joaquin Buckley last October, Morono was given a layup here against an aging opponent in McGee. He emerged with the victory he came to the UFC Apex for, but he had to work for it. Alex had a massive edge whenever this fight was on the feet. He had a couple legitimate submission attempts in Round 2, but neither materialized and Morono spent a good portion on his back as a result. All three judges felt he dropped the frame, but Alex did enough in Round 3 to earn the decision. Set to turn 35 years of age in August and with nearly 35 professional fights under his belt, expect Morono to hover around the .500 mark moving forward.

February 29, 2024
Morono is scheduled to compete against Court McGee in a welterweight fight at the UFC's April 6 event, per Aaron Bronsteter of Sportsnet.
ANALYSIS
Morono, who is entering his ninth year as a UFC athlete, will fight someone with more experience than him. McGee, who won the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter, has been in the UFC for well over a decade but is trying to get back into winning ways for the first time since 2022. As for Morono, he went 1-1 in the year, with a submission win over Tim Means and a decision loss to Joaquin Buckley.
Routed by Joaquin Buckley
WelterweightUFC
October 7, 2023
Morono lost to Joaquin Buckley via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 26-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Although he entered as a +155 underdog, this felt like a fight the 33-year-old Morono had to have if he wanted to remain relevant at 170 pounds. Instead, he was swept on the scorecards and got increasing less effective as the fight progressed. This was a sloppy bout all the way around, with both Morono and Buckley attempting a ton of wild shots, but there's zero doubt Alex consistently found himself getting the worse of the action. Morono had no chance of matching Buckley's power, making it imperative he land plenty of volume. It never happened. Sporting a 5-2 record in his past seven bouts, Morono's roster spot is beyond secure, but this lopsided setback will be difficult to overcome.
