22-Year-Old GoalieG
San Jose Sharks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Askarov is the best goaltending prospect in pro hockey and his time will come, which could be in 2024-25 after he was acquired by the Sharks in a trade from Nashville. He has it all - elite skills, incredible feet and extraordinary quickness and athleticism. It certainly wasn't the backstop's skills that saw him shipped off the San Jose. The Preds are a team with cup aspirations and signed starter Juuse Saros to an eight-year extension. Askarov could be in contention for the starting job alongside Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek. It likely will take most of training camp for a decision to be made, so Askarov may need to be on your draft radar. Read Past Outlooks

Shipped down to minors

October 4, 2024
Askarov (lower body) was demoted to AHL San Jose on Friday.
ANALYSIS
When Askarov was acquired by San Jose in a trade from Nashville during the offseason, there was speculation that he would supplant Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek as the No. 1 option between the pipes for the Sharks. Instead, the 22-year-old Askarov has been sent down to the minors to open the season, perhaps in part due to the lower-body injury that limited him during training camp. Even with the demotion, it seems unlikely this will be the last time Askarov graces the NHL roster this year.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet is reporting that Askarov is being dealt to San Jose from Nashville on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Askarov requested a trade after the Predators signed goaltender Juuse Saros to an eight-year contract extension in the offseason. Askarov -- who was selected 11th overall in 2020 -- is the top prospect in the NHL between the pipes and will provide the Sharks with outstanding netminding, if dealt there. He was 1-0-0 in two NHL appearances this past season, stopping 33 of 35 shots. He excelled at the AHL level as well, going 30-13-1 with a 2.39 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 44 regular-season games with AHL Milwaukee.
