Askarov is the best goaltending prospect in pro hockey and his time will come, which could be in 2024-25 after he was acquired by the Sharks in a trade from Nashville. He has it all - elite skills, incredible feet and extraordinary quickness and athleticism. It certainly wasn't the backstop's skills that saw him shipped off the San Jose. The Preds are a team with cup aspirations and signed starter Juuse Saros to an eight-year extension. Askarov could be in contention for the starting job alongside Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek. Askarov allowed three goals on 22 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Wild.

ANALYSIS
The Wild's top line scored in each period, though the last goal came with Askarov attempting to get off the ice for an extra attacker. Since he was caught in his own zone when the puck went in, the goal was still charged to him despite the 22-year-old having no chance to play the shot. He's had few poor outings so far, but this was among his worst at the NHL level this season. Askarov is down to 3-3-2 with a 2.39 GAA and a .917 save percentage over eight appearances. The Sharks begin a five-game road trip when they visit Detroit on Tuesday, and it wouldn't be surprising for Askarov to start three of those games, as Alexandar Georgiev hasn't done anything to justify earning more playing time.

According to Pashelka, the move to demote Askarov will likely come once Nico Strum, who is out with an upper-body injury, is ready to be activated off injured reserve, which will make keeping three goaltenders more difficult. Additionally, the Sharks probably don't want the 22-year-old Askarov just sitting in the press box or on the bench, so a move back to the minors would afford him more chances to play.
