Matteau made a decent impact in minimal time with the Blue Jackets last season, securing three points in nine outings after signing with the team in February of 2020. He's already bounced around the league a fair amount for a 26-year-old forward, and he's not guaranteed an everyday role in 2020-21, so the fantasy outlook is bleak for Matteau. If he does crack the Opening Night roster, it'll likely be as a bottom-six forward in a highly-limited role, with little chance to exceed even five points based on his performance in the NHL thus far.
After being traded by the Devils to the Canadiens in exchange for Devante Smith-Pelly at the 2016 trade deadline, Matteau became a free agent in 2017 and signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Golden Knights. The power forward appeared in eight games for Vegas, recording one assist. Matteau can be an intimidating bottom-six depth scorer when he's in the lineup, but he isn't guaranteed an NHL role in 2018-19 and likely won't be of much use in fantasy leagues.
Matteau saw 17 games in the NHL before the Devils returned him to Blainsville of the QMJHL, registering three points and seeing scant ice time. He's a budding power forward with an offensive skill set the Devils hope will show up sooner than later. He'll have a shot to make the team out of training camp, but how much of an impact he'll have remains to be seen. He's still a project at this point in his career, albeit one with much potential.
With a last name that sends shivers down the spine of the entire New Jersey fan base, Matteau was selected as the club's first-round pick in this past June's draft. More famous presently for being the son of former Ranger Stephane Matteau, the man who scored the Game 7, overtime-winning goal in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against New Jersey, Stefan showed a bit of sandpaper and grit to his junior tenure with the US National Development team, earning 93 penalty minutes and 10 points over 18 games last year. Still a ways from the NHL, Matteau projects as a two-way forward once he reaches the NHL.
