Stone has some upside, but will probably spend much of the 2009-10 season playing on Springfield's top line in the AHL. Stone registered 57 points in 77 AHL games last season between Springfield and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Stone's game in 2008-09 will likely define his future. He's now 23 years of age and has played three seasons at the AHL level for Wilkes-Barre. He only tallied one assist in six games for Pittsburgh last year. Will he become an NHLer or a minor league journeyman? Stay tuned.
Despite missing nearly half of the 2006-07 season, Stone scored 33 points (7,26) in 41 games to go along with 86 PIM. He could challenge for one of the last roster spots with Pittsburgh, but it's more likely that the 22-year-old will return to Wilkes-Barre for more seasoning. Even if he does make it to Pittsburgh, it will be as a third or fourth liner.
Stone played professionally for the first time in 2005, registering 14 goals and 22 assists in 75 games for AHL Wilkes-Barre. He also picked up 109 penalty minutes. That said, his season was somewhat disappointing considering that he'd scored 99 points (33,66) in 70 games for Brandon of the WHL in 2004-05.
The 20-year-old center rung up 99 points and 127 PIM in 70 games while playing in the WHL in 2004-05. He'll spend the 2005-06 season fine tuning his skills at the minor league level.
