Past Fantasy Outlooks
After one season as a Penguin, Poehling went unqualified this offseason and landed a one-year deal with the Flyers. He pocketed seven goals and 14 points while averaging 11:46 of ice time through 53 games last year. Despite averaging 13:50 of ice time over the last 15 games of the season, Poehling scored just three points with a minus-8 rating during that span. While he didn't do any damage on the power play, he posted three points, including two goals, while shorthanded. The 24-year-old center will begin the 2023-24 campaign in a bottom-six role, but with the state of Philadelphia's roster, he could carve out a larger role.
Signed a two-year contract extension with the Canadiens in August of 2021. The first year of the contract is a two-way deal, whereas the second year of the contract is a one-way deal.
Poehling got into 27 games with the Canadiens last year, but only mustered two points to go with 38 hits. He wasn't a lot better with AHL Laval, where he had 13 points in 38 outings. A first-round pick in 2017, Poehling will be in the mix for a job on Opening Night, but his lack of scoring success in the professional ranks suggests he needs a bit more time in the minor leagues. The 21-year-old pivot likely isn't going to make an impact for the Canadiens in 2020-21, but dynasty managers will want to keep an eye on how he progresses throughout the year -- he did have a hat trick in his NHL debut, after all.
Poehling was selected in the first round (25th overall) of the 2017 draft. At that point, he was a relatively skinny 18-year-old, but two years later, the Minnesota native checked into development camp a whopping 40 pounds heavier. He went on to finish his final two years at St. Cloud State, racking up 62 points in 72 games, before signing with Montreal in March. The 6-foot-2 forward was activated for the final game of the season, and immediately turned heads, scoring a hat trick in his NHL debut. That performance was obviously impressive, but it's not enough to guarantee him a spot on the Canadiens' 2019-20 Opening Night roster. With the Habs' depth down the middle, they may opt to have Poehling begin the campaign with AHL Laval, where he'll be guaranteed top-six minutes while getting an extended opportunity to acclimate to the pro game. Either way, Poehling is a must-own player in dynasty formats, and will warrant consideration in the later rounds of redraft leagues if he's able to crack the Opening Night lineup.
