Past Fantasy Outlooks
Asplund split 2022-23 between the Sabres and the Predators, but all eight of his points came in 27 games with Buffalo. The 25-year-old forward was scoreless in 19 outings with Nashville, and that made it an easy choice for the Preds' brass to let him walk without a qualifying offer. Asplund ultimately latched on with the Panthers, an organization not lacking in center depth, which could make it difficult for him to break into the reigning Eastern Conference champions' lineup. Asplund is just one year removed from a 27-point campaign, but with little else to offer, he doesn't need to be on fantasy managers' radar.
Originally a second-round pick of the Sabres in 2016 (33rd overall), Asplund settled into a full-time depth role for the club last season. He played in 80 games, posting a career-high eight goals and 27 points. Asplund doesn't produce enough offensively to warrant a steady look on Buffalo's top two lines, but he can move up the lineup in a pinch should injuries strike. There's nothing to get excited about here from a fantasy perspective, but Asplund should again be a regular for the Sabres in 2022-23.
Asplund played in 28 games for the Sabres a year ago, including the club's final 21 games late in the season. He managed seven goals over that span, although they came on just 34 shots on goal, good for a 20.6 shooting percentage that will never last moving forward. A rebuilding team like Buffalo really has no reason not to give Asplund a full-time role in 2021-22, but there's no real reason to be excited about any Sabre from a fantasy perspective and Asplund is no exception.
Asplund generated 19 points in 33 games with AHL Rochester and an additional one goal and two helpers in 29 appearances with the Sabres in 2019-20. The 23-year-old Swede faces an uphill battle for playing time entering 2020-21, as the Sabres have plenty of center depth following the arrival of Eric Staal. Perhaps there's room for Asplund to play on the wing, but he's unlikely to generate enough in any category to earn fantasy interest. A second-round pick from 2016, there's still a chance he can stick in a bottom-six role in the future.
Asplund begins his NHL journey after scoring 28 points in 50 games for Farjestad BK (SHL) and will likely begin the season with AHL Rochester as a 20-year-old. The Swedish center is known for his responsible two-way play and despite his young age profiles as one the team's most reliable forwards. Going forward, Asplund will be the ideal No. 3 center behind Jack Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt, but that's more than a couple years down the road. The Sabres are rather thin at center so if help is needed don't be surprised if Asplund is called up for some short-term relief.
