Howden secured a contract with Dinamo-Minsk of the KHL on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Howden saw action in a mere five contests with Winnipeg last season -- instead spending the bulk of the campaign with AHL Manitoba. While in the minors, the center tallied 13 goals and 11 helpers in 58 appearances. Selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft, the 25-year-old has failed to live up to expectations, but could get another shot in the league if he can put together a solid year in the KHL.

Howden was hampered by various injuries last season, but has shown flashes of why he has a chance to make the Panthers out of camp this upcoming season on the wing. Though he hasn't been a particularly prolific goal scorer in the professional ranks, as a junior player for WHL Moose Jaw, Howden scored 70 goals over his last two seasons in 112 games. If he's able to show more of a nose for the net as he prepares for his fourth professional season, Howden could end up sticking in the NHL on a full-time basis in 2015-16, after logging only 16 games with the Panthers the year prior. Look for Howden to contend for a third- or fourth-line role in training camp.
Howden suited up for 18 games with Florida last season, and recorded zero points and a minus-11 rating. If this winger doesn't start making an impact soon offensively, it likely won't be long before he's back with AHL San Antonio.
Howden, the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, has a legitimate shot at landing a roster spot with the big club heading into the 2012-2013 season. Either way, Howden is expected to make his way onto the NHL scene at some point this season and has second-line potential. Howden finished up his junior career with a 65 point campaign for the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) this past season. Howden is one of the top Panther prospects and has the offensive skill set to make him a solid long-term keeper option. Injuries are a factor and should be considered when figuring out where to select the youngster once a clear role within the Florida organization has been established.
Simply put, Howden is not flashy but he gets the job done. Last season the Manitoba native put up 65 points (28 G, 37 A) in as many games for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Western Hockey League(juniors), where he will once again appear, in 2010-11. This time around, he should be extra confident after being taken 25th overall by Florida in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
