2024 Fantasy Outlook
While his $3 million cap hit isn't absurd, Engvall was an occasional healthy scratch in 2023-24. That didn't stop him from posting 28 points in 74 regular-season contests, but it was the first time in three years he missed the 30-point mark. Entering his age-28 season, it's clear that Engvall is a steady middle-six winger with speed to burn, but that doesn't make him a fantasy asset. In addition to his lackluster offense, Engvall typically won't add much in the way of physicality, and he rarely sees much more than second-unit minutes on the power play. Throw in the Islanders' tendency for ultra-defensive hockey, and you can find depth forwards with far more upside in the late rounds of fantasy drafts. Read Past Outlooks

Engvall is still with the Islanders ahead of Sunday's game against Chicago, according to the NHL media site.
ANALYSIS
Engvall didn't practice Saturday after being placed on waivers Friday but could play in Sunday's matchup if Bo Horvat (lower body) is unavailable. The 28-year-old Engvall has three goals, six points and 26 shots on net in 20 appearances this season.

Lost in the shuffle on a loaded Toronto team, Envgall was dealt to the Islanders in late February and played well in his brief stint with the club, posting nine points in 18 regular-season games. Clearly impressed with what they saw, New York handed Engvall a massive seven-year contract to stay on Long Island, worth $3 million annually. The length of the deal has, and will continue to be debated for a while, but there's zero doubt Engvall is well worth that price tag. He should push for 20 goals and 50 points in his first full season with the team.
Engvall established himself as a regular for the Leafs a season ago (78 games), finishing with career-best marks in goals (15), points (35), shots on goal (154) and average time on ice (13:17). Engvall's breakout was one of the reasons Toronto was able to let Ilya Mikheyev walk in unrestricted free agency. Engvall should again fill a middle-six role for the Leafs, with an eye towards his own pending unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2023.
Engvall didn't stand out much last year, logging 12 points, 43 hits and 61 shots on goal in a part-time, bottom-six role with Toronto. The 25-year-old dodged a bullet after the Maple Leafs acquired Jared McCann only to lose McCann in the Kraken's expansion draft, which should keep Engvall in the lineup to begin 2021-22. He'll face a challenge for playing time from Michael Amadio, but Engvall has shown a bit more consistency in his NHL career, and both could shift to the wing to give Jason Spezza rest on occasion. Even if he's a regular presence in the lineup, Engvall doesn't seem likely to produce much more than 20 points with only modest physicality, giving him little fantasy appeal.
Engvall broke through to the NHL in 2019-20, managing 15 points in 48 games in his rookie season. Despite a limited, bottom-six role, he was a productive player, but the natural left wing will have to compete with Alex Kerfoot and Nick Robertson for playing time this year. Having said that, Engvall has also seen time at center and could challenge Jason Spezza for a spot in the lineup at times. Regardless of role, Engvall is almost certainly going to be with the parent club throughout 2020-21, but he could find himself in the press box at times -- that uncertainty makes his fantasy outlook a bit sour.

Engvall is projected to be a healthy scratch against the Penguins on Wednesday, according to Arthur Staple of The Athletic.

That would give Engvall a breather before the Islanders' playoff series versus Carolina. The 27-year-old has 10 goals and 28 points in 74 outings in 2023-24.
