ANALYSIS
Forsberg reportedly reached the decision over lunch with his fiancée Sunday, and from there drove straight to Avs GM Greg Sherman's house to tell him the bad news. "It was not an easy decision," Forsberg said. "But I finally decided, with my fiancée, Nicole, that I would not put my health at risk anymore." The cause for Foppa's latest - and no doubt final - decision to retire is said to be ongoing problems with his right foot. Despite feeling well enough to return to the Avs last Sunday, Forsberg felt the familiar discomfort in his right skate during his final game, Saturday at Nashville. The Avs have announced that a special night will be held for Forsberg at the Pepsi Center in Denver, when his No. 21 will be retired. Forsberg retires as the NHL's fourth all-time leader in assists per game (0.90) and 10th in points per game (1.25). He won two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche, in 1996 and 2001, and won two Olympic gold medals for his native Sweden. He won the NHL's Hart Trophy in 2003 as MVP.

Once again, Forsberg missed most of the 2006-07 season with an assortment of injuries, the worst being a recurring foot problem. He did finish with 15 points in the 17 regular season games he did skate in, which shows just how valuable he is when he's playing, even if he's not completely healthy. He's only played in 57 regular season games in two seasons, but has 55 points in them. Foot and hernia issues have his status for the 2007-08 season in doubt, though the latest is he's skating again and may be looking to hook on with an NHL team sometime early in 2008. He's a free man, so the number of suitors that time of year would be high.
All Forsberg has to do to put up major numbers is stay healthy. Forsberg had ankle surgery this offseason, but he is expected to be ready for training camp. If he stays healthy all season, Forsberg could lead the league in scoring. Just remember he could just as easily end up hurt and only playing in 20 games.
A fantasy stud, Forsberg should excel playing in Philadelphia, playing on a line with Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne. If Forsberg stays healthy, a 20 goal & 70 assist season is realistic.
