Merkley had a goal and an assist in four games with the Devils last season, and he should earn a full-time role with the team this year. The 30th overall selection from the 2015 draft scored 18 goals and 39 points in 38 AHL games in 2017-18, but he hasn't been able to replicate that success at the AHL level since. New Jersey's right wing depth chart is wide open after Kyle Palmieri, so Merkley could get a look in the top six if he rediscovers the scoring touch from his first AHL season, but he could just as easily spend the year buried in the bottom six.
Merkley had to work his way back from a knee injury before playing in 45 games for AHL Tucson last season, registering 10 goals and 24 assists. The first-round pick from 2015 has 73 points in 83 games at the AHL level over parts of two seasons, but he'll be in the mix for a bottom-six role when the Coyotes open training camp. The Coyotes are deep up the middle, but a good showing from Merkley could earn him a spot on the wing..
Merkley was selected by the Coyotes with the 30th overall pick, which the team acquired from the Blackhawks in exchange for Antoine Vermette at the trade deadline. Despite a small stature (5-foot-11 and 191 pounds), Merkley picked up 20 goals, 90, points, and 79 PIM with WHL Kelowna last season. He will need more time in junior, but is among the many young prospects expected to help move the franchise forward in the years to come.
