ANALYSIS
Peca spent the last two years with Columbus, but was unable to catch on with a new team prior to this season. Peca's injury curse mostly left him alone last season and he played in 65 games, scoring 34 points. His days as a 20 goal scorer are long behind him, but when he's on the ice he's still an effective checking line center.
Peca managed just 35 games in '06-'07 thanks to a broken leg. The defensive stalwart was on his usual 40 point pace with the Leafs when he went down, and even though he could be the #2 center in Columbus there's little reason to think his production will improve.
Agitator supreme Peca had his worst offensive season in the NHL last year, scoring just nine goals and 23 points in 71 games with Edmonton. He rebounded in the playoffs with six goals and 11 points in 24 games, however, and should return to his usual 20-goal, 40-point plateau with the Maple Leafs. His value in the NHL comes on defense, not offense.
A terrific penalty killer, it's no secret that Peca is one of the best checkers in the NHL, in both the forechecking and bodychecking areas. Best suited as a second line center, Peca will likely have to man the first line due to a lack of depth up the middle on the roster. 55 to 60 points is his ceiling, 45 to 55 points is his usual range.
