Past Fantasy Outlooks
The AHL journeyman was forced into net for two games with Dallas last season and actually won one of them, his first NHL victory since the 2013-14 campaign. McKenna is purely a depth goaltending option at this stage of career, not that he was ever a starting-caliber player at the top level, and after signing a two-way deal with Ottawa in the offseason, he'll give the Senators a little security behind the aging Craig Anderson.
McKenna has played just about everywhere over the course of his lengthy career. After a successful career at St. Lawrence University, McKenna has bounced around the ECHL, AHL, and has seen spot duty in the NHL, playing in seven games for the Devils, Blue Jackets, and Coyotes since 2010. Last season for AHL Portland in the Coyotes organization, McKenna went 27-18-6 while posting a 2.24 goals GAA and a .926 save percentage in 52 games. Those numbers are impressive, but he's never been able to translate that success over to the NHL level and likely won't at this stage of his development. With Roberto Luongo and Al Montoya locked in as the Panthers' two goalies, it’s unlikely McKenna gets in more than a game or two in the NHL this season.
McKenna, an AHL veteran goalie will provide some organizational depth for the Blue Jackets.
McKenna usurped the AHL netminder slot from Jeff Frazee in 2010 and stuck around until the end of training camp before returning to Albany. He's one of several goaltending prospects in the system and should see plenty of action in the minors.
