Kostka inked a deal with Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League on Sept. 1, TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
After 10 professional seasons and 85 NHL games, the former UMass-Amherst Minuteman has decided to try to rejuvenate his career in Sweden. Kostka has proven to be a productive player at the AHL level, recording 267 points in 517 games, and he'll be hoping that his game translates better to Europe's larger ice surfaces.

After tallying one point while playing in seven games for the New York Rangers in the 2014-15 season, Kostka packed his bags for Ottawa in the offseason, agreeing to a one-year, two-way deal in July. The journeyman defenseman isn't expected to crack the Sens' roster out of training camp, but will offer a depth body in the minors that the team can plug in at the NHL level when injuries inevitably take their toll.
More considered to be a depth signing to protect the organization from injuries on the right-hand side of the blue line, the 28-year-old Kostka makes for an interesting value to the Rangers. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound defenseman is certainly looking to make his name anywhere, after donning ten different jerseys over the past seven seasons. It's worth noting, Kotska did put up a respectable eight points in 19 games dressed for Tampa Bay in 2013-14. While the undrafted Toronto native is very likely to begin the season with yet another AHL franchise, Hartford, it's inconceivable that he reproduce the small sample production should the opportunity arise with the parent club Rangers.
It's nice to see Kostka earn a deal with the Hawks, but don't expect huge things from this smooth-skating, yet under-sized defender. His 2012-13 with the Leafs was a lovely story, but he's no more than a six/seven defender, particularly on a deep squad like the defending Cup champs.
Kostka is a 27-year-old veteran AHL defender who'll help the Marlies develop their young blueliners, but never see the wide seats of an NHL charter. Career minor leaguers are still good guys, though …
Despite being a non-drafted rookie, Kostka ended up having one of the biggest presences in Portland last season. He played in 80 games for the Sabres' affiliate team and was second on the team's defense in scoring with 4 goals and 26 assists. Known for his usually high plus/minus ratings, Kostka also led the team's defense with plus-8. Don't be shocked if this surprise prospect sees some time in the NHL this season as a depth player.
Kostka led all NCAA defensemen in power-play goals last season. His defensive skills need more polish and he will likely spend 2008-09 in the AHL.
