Gerber took a year off from the NHL to play in the KHL last season. He signed on with Edmonton this season but will begin to work his way back by playing in the AHL with Springfield. At best he is fourth on the Oilers depth chart so his only chance at returning to Edmonton would be if a slew of injuries were to hit the big club.
Gerber's entering the last year of his three-year contract with Ottawa and by all acounts, his time in Canada's capital has not been kind. Now that Ray Emery is gone, Gerber has a chance to put last year behind him and concentrate fully on his goaltending duties. With a decent defense in front of him, Gerber should notch around 35 wins this year with an above average GAA and SV%.
Gerber should see between 15-18 games as Ray Emery's backup in Ottawa. There is a chance Gerber could be traded later this year to a team with a pressing goaltending problem, but if that doesn't occur Gerber should post above average numbers for a backup, especially with Ottawa's defense in front of him.
Expect Gerber to have a strong season with his new team. He has the support of Bryan Murray who drafted him into the league when he was Anaheim’s GM back in 2001. Don’t be surprised if Gerber puts up 35-40 wins this season behind an Ottawa team that has one of the best defenses in the league.
Gerber starts the year with the #1 goaltender job in his pocket. He is a solid if unspectacular goaltender, but his wins will suffer considering the 'Canes poor prospects for the season. An upgraded defensive corps will probably earn him a slight increase in his aggregate numbers, such as GAA and save %.
