The ageless (actually he's 42) Recchi only missed one game in 2009-10 and that was the regular-season finale when the Bruins had clinched a playoff spot. The veteran winger finished up with a respectable total of 18 goals and 43 points, while continuing to spark the team with his leadership. Look for more of the same in 2010-11.
Recchi, who scored 10 goals and six assists in 18 games with the Bruins last season after coming over from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline, proved that he still has the guile to get it done at a high level at age 41. He'll give it another go with a Bruins' team that could contend for the Cup this coming season, at a very reasonable cap rate. His 2008-09 numbers (23 goals, 61 points in 80 games) should be approachable this coming season, which gives him some value in deeper leagues.
Old-man Recchi entered his fourth decade this past February. Not that there's anything wrong with 40-year-olds, of course. It's just that his role this season will be "specialized" (think special teams) with other duties (think third line) as required. Your format will dictate if a guy like him has any value -- don't spend based on the name without checking his pension card first.
Recchi, 38, still has something left in the tank, as evidenced by his role in getting Carolina a drink from Lord Stanley's Cup last year. But on a young team like Pittsburgh, his defensive deficiencies are magnified. Fantasy owners need to ask whether his points production (57 points in 63 games) is worth his terrible plus/minus rating (minus-28).
Rumors of Recchi's demise were greatly exaggerated prior to the 2003-04 year. The former Penguins' fourth-round choice in the 1988 Entry Draft totaled 75 points (26/49) and played in all of the Flyers' 82 games. Only five players tallied more than Recchi's 14 power-play goals. He'll likely continue piling up points with the man-advantage in Pittsburgh.
