Karel Vejmelka

Karel Vejmelka

28-Year-Old GoalieG
Utah Hockey Club
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Vejmelka looked like Utah's goalie of the future with a breakout 2022-23 showing, but he crashed to Earth in 2023-24, and his game seemed porous. There was even talk of waiving him. Vejmelka is a solid enough netminder, but with Connor Ingram's emergence, he's going to settle for the No. 2 role in Utah. The arrival of Mikhail Sergachev and John Marino on the team's blue line will help both goalies tremendously, so expect far better numbers for Vejmelka than his 3.35 GAA and .895 save percentage from last year. He could offer some depth fantasy value if he can force a platoon situation. Read Past Outlooks

No help in Monday's loss
GUtah Hockey Club
October 14, 2024
Vejmelka turned aside 30 of 33 shots in Monday's 3-0 loss to the Devils.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start of the season, Vejmelka played well -- two of the three shots that beat him came on New Jersey power plays -- but he got no support from his offense. Connor Ingram has a 3.55 GAA and .871 save percentage despite his 3-0-0 start to the season, but so far Vejmelka appears firmly in the No. 2 role between the pipes for Utah.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Vejmelka has been serviceable in goal for a poor Coyotes team since his debut during the 2021-22 campaign. Last season, he posted a 3.43 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 50 appearances. He was better at home, registering a .907 save percentage while earning 12 of his 18 wins. However, fatigue seemingly set in down the stretch. Vejmelka went 4-7-2 with an .877 save percentage and a 4.15 GAA in his last 14 appearances. The 27-year-old will be entering the second year of his three-year deal and figures to be Arizona's top goaltending option again this season. Vejmelka's fantasy ceiling is capped due to a poor surrounding cast and limited upside.
Vejmelka arrived stateside last season after many years of playing in his native Czechia and established himself as Arizona's No. 1 goaltender. Unfortunately that isn't a gig these days that will do wonders for your statistics. All told, Vejmelka played in 52 games, posting a horrific 13-32-3 record along with a 3.68 GAA and .898 save percentage. He had one shutout. The overall state of the Coyotes' franchise at the moment makes it nearly impossible to trust any goaltender on their team, Vejmelka included, from a fantasy perspective. He's nothing more than a late-round dart throw for managers looking for a goalie who should get consistent playing time.

Trade target?
GArizona Coyotes
December 16, 2023
Several teams are interested in acquiring Vejmelka via trade, according to Kevin Weekes of ESPN.
ANALYSIS
Vejmelka has a 2-7-2 record, 3.50 GAA and .892 save percentage in 12 contests this season. While those numbers are poor, they would likely improve if he shifts to a team that's stronger defensively. Vejmelka carries a $2.725 million cap hit through the 2024-25 campaign.
