Currently, Callahan is merely a depth defenseman with no fantasy value. He will open the season with Abbotsford (AHL).
Callahan has been in the AHL for seven consecutive seasons, and despite signing with the Sharks in July of 2009, he only appeared in one NHL game for San Jose. Now, he is property of a rebuilding Florida team. It's very unlikely that he will live up to the lofty standards that were expected from him after being drafted in the third round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Callahan, former property of the Islanders, spent the majority of his 2008-09 season skating for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL, recording 13 points (4G, 9A) in 56 games. Of course, the goal in fantasy hockey is to get people on your team who can help light up the scoreboard, so Callahan is not your guy.
Barring injury, Callahan will spend most, if not all, of the 2008-09 season with Bridgeport of the AHL.
