Shelley saw very limited time with the Flyers last season, appearing in just one game for eight minutes. He didn't collect any points in that short time, and it's unlikely the veteran will see enough ice time to make any valuable fantasy contributions.
Shelley spent much of last season as a healthy scratch or injured. In 30 starts, he accrued 64 penalty minutes, but no real point production. The coaching staff hesitates to play him in the same games as enforcer Zac Rinaldo, which led to a serious decrease in games played for Shelley. It’s unlikely the veteran will provide much to fantasy owners this season.
After seeing more of the ice, Shelley saw his PIMs again reach triple digits while the rest of his stats remained nearly non-existent. He battled a broken orbital bone and a knee injury down the stretch of the season as well. If Shelley is able to stay in the lineup, he'll spend plenty of time in the Sin Bin.
Shelley will give the Flyers depth this season, but doesn't give fantasy owners much of anything as he mostly stays out of the penalty box now, unlike earlier in his career.
All teams should have an enforcer to strike fear into their opponents. Shelley is that man for the Sharks. As is the case with most enforcers, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Shelley is much better at dropping his gloves for a fight than he is marking up the box score with points. Only if your league is penalty heavy, consider picking him up since he’s a virtual lock for more than 100 minutes in the Sin Bin.
Shelley earned a two-year contract with the Sharks in June 2008. The big wigs in the Sharks front office appreciate his toughness and character. Shelly has no problem doing the dirty work and his name has become synonymous with penalty minutes, evident from his 1,116 PIM in 411 career games. If you're looking for a gritty player who will rack up the penalties, Shelley is your man.
The Blue Jackets' resident goon continues to see his PIMs, and usefulness, drop in the post-lockout NHL.
Blue Jackets enforced set a career high with 80 games played and 10 points in '05-'06, but he posted the lowest PIM total (163) since breaking into the NHL.
Columbus' resident enforcer, Shelley has racked up more than 200 PIMs in each of his three full NHL seasons, while never scoring more than three goals and six points. Expect more of the same in '05-'06.
