Vandermeer was assigned to AHL Chicago on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The defenseman went unclaimed on waivers, earning the demotion to the minors while Jordan Schroeder was called up in his place. Vandermeer appears to be strictly organizational depth, and seems destined to shuttle between Chicago and Vancouver throughout the season.

Vandermeer, who signed a one-year contract with the Sharks this summer, is the type of player that goalies love to have around. He is effective on the penalty kill and protects the net with plenty of blocked shots. These skills make him a solid stay-at-home defenseman, yet he lacks offense and is not worth a look in most fantasy drafts.
Vandermeer is most likely penciled in on the third paring for the Oilers blueline. He will add a physical presence to the Oilers defense, but won't add much to your fantasy team.
Vandermeer comes to Phoenix after an offseason trade with Calgary. Vandermeer is a big defensive defender who won't show up on the scoresheet a whole lot, but as a defenseman he always hovers around zero in plus-minus, bringing something to the Coyotes that they desperately need. The concern is that Vandermeer has not played more than 46 games since 2005-2006. If he can stay healthy, Phoenix will absolutely keep a few more pucks out of the net because of it.
After getting traded to the Flames last season, Vandermeer put up two points in 21 games. He played solid, if unspectacular, hockey last season, and should find himself on the third line of defense.
Vandermeer looks to stay healthy for the entire year after missing the last three months of the 2006-07 season with a broken ankle. Vandermeer is a low-end defenseman on your fantasy team.
In his return back to Chicago last season, Vandermeer put up his best numbers, 6 goals and 18 assists, but he did that in 76 games and needs to adjust to the new NHL with more scoring.
Vandermerr is a physical defenseman who is still learning the ropes. He will get plenty of tutelage from fellow Hawks defensemen, Jassen Cullimore and Todd Simpson. In 2003-04, he split time between Chicago and Norfolk.
