Woywitka signed a two-way contract with the Blues, but at this point, he appears to be call-up guy from Peoria. The Blues have six defensemen on one-way contracts, so there's an opportunity for him to compete as a seventh blueliner, but that just means he'll be a healthy scratch most nights.
Woywitka spent most of the season as Dallas' extra defenseman, skating in 36 contests and chipping in just three assists. He's expected to play a similar role this season.
Woywitka has put up good numbers in the AHL as evidenced by 30 points in 52 games with Peoria last season. He won't produce at that level this season in the NHL but the Blues still hope that he is able to contribute significantly when he returns from an early season foot injury. He is expected to be out until early to mid-November.
Woywitka was called up from the AHL in late January last season as an injury fill-in, and impressed head coach Andy Murray enough that Murray kept him around for the remainder of the season. He will line up again as the Blues' #7 or #8 defenseman and probably won't see a lot of ice time, assuming the rest of the blueline corps remains healthy. He will probably open the season with the Blues' AHL affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen.
Woywitka is too far down on the Blues’ depth chart to have any fantasy value. He has the potential to be a top-four defenseman but is still a work in progress and needs more experience.
