The fact that Claesson remains unsigned as of mid-November speaks volumes in regards to his value for both to the Devils and fantasy players. He played in a meager five NHL contests for New Jersey in 2019-20 and will likely spend the bulk of the upcoming campaign in the minors, regardless of where he lands, making him a fantasy non-factor even in deeper formats.
Claesson is a no-frills defenseman from Sweden. Formerly with the Senators, he signed a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Rangers in July. Considering the Blueshirts allowed the fourth-most goals per game in 2017-18 (3.21), he could be in store for significant playing time after averaging 15:21 over a three-year stint in Ottawa. Fantasy owners won't be clamoring over a player who has only registered 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) over 113 career contests, but Claesson does have 246 hits and 138 blocked shots over that span.
Claesson was solid in limited action with the Senators last season, notching a surprising 11 points (three goals, eight assists) and 55 hits while averaging 13:08 of ice time over 33 games. The 2011 fifth-round pick should see his first full season with the big club in 2017-18, but there’s no reason to believe that he’s on his way to fantasy relevance. Claesson isn't expected to skate on either of Ottawa’s power-play units this season, capping his offensive upside even if he is indeed Marc Methot’s replacement as Erik Karlsson’s new stay-at-home complement. The 24-year-old blueliner does project to be a key member of the Senators’ defensive corps either way, but his fantasy value will be quite low.
Claesson, 22, scored four goals and had 15 assists for AHL Binghamton in 2014-15, and isn't considered a premier blue-line prospect within the organization. He'll attend training camp with the big club this season, but don't expect him to make a legitimate run at a full-time role in Ottawa until he showcases more notable production in the minors.
