ANALYSIS
At 42 years of age, Belfour was holding out for a starting job in the NHL, but couldn't find a suitor even after posting a 27-17-10 record and 2.77 goals-against average with Florida last season. It is likely that Belfour's repeated off-ice issues (there were two notable ones in 2006-07, with one leading to an arrest) made it easier for teams to turn to other options.

Belfour's numbers declined significantly last season in Toronto, while being limited to only 49 games because of a recurring back injury. Unable to land a starting job elsewhere, Belfour is looking to challenge Alex Auld for playing time in Florida. If he can stay healthy, there's no reason to think he can't appear in about 30 games with at least 15 wins and a goal-against average of around 3.00. Problem is, is that really worth getting excited about fantasy-wise?
Belfour is a 40-year-old reflex goalie with a bad back. We repeat, he's old, relies on skills that deteriorate with age AND he could hurt himself picking up the soap in the shower. But, the guy does deserve a lot of credit for overhauling his style of play a few years back to accommodate the issues already described. He's much more of a positional, angles goalie now and that's a breed that can perform better, longer. Plus, with only 12 wins he'll move into second on the NHL's all-time wins list so the motivation is there for one more above average season. Just don't count on all-star type numbers any more.
