Olsen was released from his professional tryout agreement with the Flames on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Olsen will report to Calgary's minor-league affiliate, AHL Stockton, for its training camp in order to try to see if he fits with that program. While it's possible he could do enough to earn a two-way deal, the blueliner's best shot might be under an AHL-only contract for the 2017-18 campaign.

A former first round pick in 2009 by the Blackhawks, Olsen is slowly working his way into becoming a full-time NHL player. For the past two seasons, he's split his time between the AHL and NHL, scoring two goals and six assists in 44 games for the Panthers in 2014-15. The 24-year-old still has time to live up to the promise he showed in college, but will find it difficult to break into the Panthers’ lineup on a consistent basis. The team may elect to keep Olsen in the AHL until more regular minutes open up, unless he has a particularly strong camp and cracks the team’s lineup out of the gate.
Olsen played 44 games for Florida in 2013-14, earning more than 15 minutes of ice-time per game and registering 12 points, 60 shots, and 116 hits, which are respectable numbers for the 23-year-old. The youngster should find himself among the Panthers top-six and see some time on the power play. Even if he only maintains his play from last year over a full schedule, he will be worth keeping an eye on. If he steps his game up, especially on offense and the power play, he will be downright intriguing.
Olsen could be one of the young and up-and-coming Hawks that could see minutes with the big club. He had his third year under his belt with Rockford of the AHL and might be ready to at least get some time in Chicago. He's a defense-first blueliner who is unlikely to provide much fantasy value when he hits the big club.
The Blackhawks' first-round pick (2009) got his first taste of the NHL last season. The physical crease clearer played 28 games and registered his first -- and so far only -- NHL point, an assist against Columbus. But points are not his strength -- you'll draft him for hits and blocked shots. He'll probably shuttle up and down between the NHL and AHL this year, and settle into a full-time NHL gig some time in 2013-14.
Olsen was sent down by the Blackhawks to Rockford of the AHL in October.
Chicago used their 28th overall pick in the 2009 Entry Draft to snag Olsen, a mettlesome rearguard native to Calgary. While he's all kinds of talented, the 19-year-old is a spring chicken in need of more experience, so look for him to get in another season with the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2010-11.
