Past Fantasy Outlooks
With a lack of more proven options, Gambrell is on track to fill a bottom-six role to open the 2021-22 campaign with San Jose. The 25-year-old has produced 23 points in 99 games over the last two seasons as he's established himself as a steady NHL presence. The Sharks liked the step he took forward as a defensive center last season -- he'll likely see some penalty-killing duties in 2021-22, although he's not enough of a scoring threat to see power-play time. A full 82-game season should give Gambrell a chance to record 20 points with roughly 120 hits, and he could see a more advanced role if injuries arise in the Sharks' top six. That said, he probably won't have a breakout year and can be left undrafted in standard formats.
Gambrell finally became a full-time NHLer in 2019-20, but that only translated into 11 points in 50 games. The 24-year-old is in line to be the Sharks' third-line center this year following the departure of Joe Thornton to Toronto. That should put Gambrell in line for an increase in offense, but a shortened 56-game schedule may minimize his progress. Gambrell's not an overly physical player, so it'll be up to his scoring numbers to determine his fantasy relevance -- the safe bet is that he's unlikely to interest fantasy managers outside of deep formats.
Gambrell is still searching for his first NHL point after teetering between the Sharks and their minor-league affiliate, AHL San Jose, the past two seasons. He's appeared in 11 top-level games, but last year, the center from the University of Denver notched seven goals and 20 assists between 67 contests for the Barracuda as a subtle reminder that he is capable of generating offense in the right situation. Gambrell signed a two-year contract extension with Team Teal in July, and he should be given more responsibility with the parent club following captain Joe Pavelski's trade to Dallas. Nabbed by the Sharks with a second-round (60th overall) pick in 2016, Gambrell is just getting started, so don't expect him to be selected in most fantasy drafts, though he could be worth a late-round flier.
Gambrell was still in college for most of the 2017-18 campaign, racking up an impressive 13 goals and 43 points in 41 contests during his junior year at the University of Denver, but the Sharks opted to sign him to an entry-level deal after his collegiate season came to a close. The 2016 second-round pick went on to appear in the final three games of the campaign with San Jose, going scoreless while posting a minus-1 rating over that span. Gambrell will likely spend the majority of the 2018-19 season developing in the minors, but if Joe Thornton decides to retire after this year, there could be an open spot in the lineup for the youngster in 2019-20. The 21-year-old pivot is definitely a player to keep an eye on in dynasty formats, but he likely won't be making a significant impact at the NHL level this season.
