In baseball, it's called Quad-A; in hockey, it's called journeyman pro. Sexton is the epitome of a tweener -- not quite good enough to play a regular shift in the NHL, but too good for the AHL. His NHL opportunity has all but passed him by -- the prospects keep arriving in Anaheim and they keep slipping in above him on the depth chart. He'll be hard pressed to earn a job in camp and that means another start in the AHL. A change of scenery might help; he might also end up overseas.
Sexton scored four goals and added nine assists in 47 games played for the Ducks last season, and he has 25-plus point potential assuming he could log more ice time. Until that happens, Sexton's fantasy appeal is limited, but he could be one of the primary options utilized to replace Teemu Selanne on the second line if the Finnish Flash opts to retire.
Sexton began his NHL career in 2009-10 and appeared in 41 games for the Ducks; he only scored 19 points (9G 10A). For 2010-11, his numbers may slightly improve, as long as he gets the playing time to do so. If he can stay up in the NHL, he may crack the 30-point barrier.
Sexton had a good season with Bowling Green leading the team in scoring with 39 points in 38 games, but don't expect him to break into the NHL just yet. Sexton could use time to mature and will most likely be spending his contract in the AHL.
