Potter agreed to a one-year contract with Kolner Haie of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Potter has played in just seven NHL games over the last two seasons, recording no points and a mere two shots on goal. In the AHL this year, the defenseman tallied 20 points in 70 regular-season outings in addition to 44 PIM. At 32 years old, Potter's unlikely to find his way back to the NHL following this stint in Europe.

Potter will once again fight for a spot in the lineup in training camp, but like quite a few of the other defensive players on the squad, he doesn't offer much that separates himself from the pack. In the end, he may spend more time as a healthy scratch or in the AHL than he does playing for Edmonton.
Potter is another tweener -- really not an NHL defensemean, but played more than he should because the Oilers had such a lack of depth at that position. He delivered 21 points in 62 games last season and will likely be deployed in the same way again this year. He'll be a 6/7 defender so be prepared for him to spend some time in the press box.
Potter was a Rangers' draft pick in 2003 and spent last season with the Penguins. He has been a career minor leaguer who gets called up to the big club when injuries strike. Odds are he will fill that exact same role with the Oilers in 2011-12.
Potter was the Rangers’ fourth round selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He’s spent most of his career in the minors since the time he was drafted. Occasionally, he’s called up but it’s usually for a brief period of time. The 26-year-old defenseman played in three games for the Rangers last season, recording two PIM while failing to register any points. He’ll start out this season playing for Hartford of the AHL.
Potter was up and down between Hartford and New York last year, but has a chance to establish himself during training camp this year. The Rangers were high on him, but may have soured a bit after he failed to make a big impression in his short time with the parent club last season.
Still a year away from being a full time NHL player. Needs to work on his discipling as he had over 100 PIMs last season in the AHL. That's a bit much for someone who is not a fighter.
