Acquired from the Coyotes as part of the package for the disgruntled Martin Erat, Brown showed promise as a fourth-line grinder in the NHL ranks, finishing with a goal and an assist in six games with the Capitals after the trade deadline, while providing a tough, physical presence. Though he will compete for a spot on the Capitals’ fourth-line for 2013-2014, the power forward may again be destined for AHL Hershey to round out his game.
Brown led all first-year AHL players last season with 29 goals and could be a player to watch at training camp this fall. Coyotes' general manager Don Maloney is a fan and has mentioned Brown as someone who could come in and bring an offensive spark to the team.
Brown, drafted in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, has spent the last three seasons at the University of Michigan, where last year he tallied the best offensive output of his collegiate career (66 points in 38 games). Brown will forgo his senior season with the Wolverines after signing a three-year deal with Phoenix in March 2012 and will likely spend much of the upcoming season in Portland.
Brown saw time in 42 games with a Michigan Wolverine squad that lost the national championship in OT last season, notching nine goals and 14 assists while collecting 59 PIMs. The junior will spend the 2011-12 season in Ann Arbor.
Brown was the second-round pick of Phoenix in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He'll join the University of Michigan's sensational freshman class this season, and surely be monitored closely by the Coyotes all year. He played with the United States National Under-18 team last year, and notched 20 goals and 18 assists in 62 games. He also led the team in penalty minutes, and was second on the team with 10 power play goals.
