Bellemore, who signed a one-year contract with Carolina in July, played in 64 games for the Hurricanes last season and was a regular member of the team’s blue line corps from February to April. Unfortunately, scoring is not one of Bellemore’s strong suits, as he has only been able to contribute two goals and eight assists over the stretch of his two-year tenure in Raleigh. The defenseman stands to improve on those numbers since he's slowly but surely gaining professional experience, but don’t expect a big spike in his totals just yet. He will likely continue to play a stay-at-home role as part of the team’s third defensive pairing, so generating offense will not be high on his to-do list once again this upcoming season.

An organizational depth player who rarely makes his way up to the big club, Bellemore likely won't be a viable roster option in 2012-13 in just about all formats. He played 76 games for Charlotte (AHL) with 10 points and a minus-15 rating.

The Hurricanes continue to let Bellemore, their sixth-round draft choice in 2006, work on his game in the minor league system. He is a big defender (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) but his upside handling the puck is severely limited, as he’s totaled just 14 points in 146 games with AHL Albany/Charlotte the past two seasons. However, Bellemore signed a two-year, two-way contract in July of 2011, giving the Hurricanes the option to shuffle him between the NHL and the minors this season. He shouldn’t be on your radar as it applies to fantasy hockey.

Bellemore, a sixth round selection of the 2007 draft, is expected to bid for a job with the Hurricanes ahead of the 2010-11 season. Even if he doesn't make the team out of training camp, he could be a popular call-up if injuries deplete Carolina's cast of blueliners. Last season with Albany of the AHL, Bellemore racked up 81 penalty minutes in 75 games. More of the same can be expected from him in the upcoming season.

The ‘Canes averaged the least amount of penalty minutes last season which suggests they could use some punishers. Bellemore is tough and imposing, but there is no indication that he’s ready for the big stage. First things first, the 21-year-old needs to earn consistent playing time for Albany of the AHL.

Bellemore appears headed for Albany of the AHL for at least one full season, and probably more. He's just 20 years old, and it's too early to make a reliable estimate of his likely upside.
