Ross wasn't tendered a qualifying offer by the Oilers on Monday, meaning he'll become an unrestricted free agent, Jason Gregor of the Edmonton Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Ross had a deal in place in May to play for the Iserlohn Roosters of Germany the coming season, but the Oilers would have retained his rights had they elected to extend a qualifying offer. Instead, Ross, who the Oilers had just acquired days earlier at the NHL Draft, will be free to sign with any team should he elect to return to North America down the road.

Ross' game is all about truculence, but, this past season, he added some talent to the mix, as well. He delivered 42 goals for the WHL's Portland Winterhawks last season -- that was good enough for a top-10 finish league-wide. Playing in Portland is a turbo boost for most prospects -- that team plays the closest to an NHL style in all of junior hockey. So, Ross could bring his grit to Leafland a whole lot sooner than some of the team's other prospects. Expect him to be in the AHL this season, though -- there just aren't many available spots on the big club.
Ross really is a Tasmanian Devil on skates. He's not unlike the "coloorful" Esa Tikkanen, a guy you loved to have on your team but whose abrasive, irritating, in-your-face approach made enemies everywhere else. And like Tikkanen, Ross also brings skill to the table. He played the last two seasons alongside higher profile prospects, Nino Niederreiter (Islanders) and Ryan Johansen (Jackets), and put up 58 goals and 137 points. Of course, there were also the 374 PIMs to go with that. He's about three seasons away from the NHL but he'll be a multi-category producer when he gets there.
Ross is your classic agitator who also brings some skill to the table (30 goals, 70 points and 200+ PIMs with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL last season). He will eventually become a fan favorite in Toronto with his opportunistic and abrasive play, and will likely remind Gen Xers of Esa Tikkanen or Darcy Tucker. Scouts on the draft floor were calling him a “Tasmanian Devil on skates." You get the picture.
