Ben Chiarot

33-Year-Old DefensemanD
Detroit Red Wings
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Chiarot has posted nearly identical numbers in two seasons with the Red Wings. He registered five goals, 19 points, 110 shots on net, 147 hits and 163 blocked shots in 76 outings during the 2022-23 campaign. Chiarot followed that up with five goals, 20 points, 107 shots, 163 hits and a career-high 167 blocks across 77 contests in 2023-24. He also improved to a minus-3 rating after finishing with a brutal minus-31 rating in his first season with Detroit. Chiarot's 19:47 of ice time per contest was the third-highest on the team last season. He could see more time at even strength and the penalty kill after Jake Walman was traded to San Jose in the summer. The 33-year-old Chiarot won't contribute much offensively but offers enough category coverage to warrant some fantasy attention in deeper banger leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Sends helper in win
DDetroit Red Wings
October 13, 2024
Chiarot notched an assist, two hits, four blocked shots, two PIM and a plus-2 rating in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Predators.
ANALYSIS
Chiarot has a helper, four hits and six blocks through two contests. His spot on the top pairing will help him pick up some ancillary offense when he gets minutes with the Red Wings' big names, and he even saw time on the second power-play unit Saturday. Chiarot's best season was a 26-point campaign split between Montreal and Florida in 2021-22, though he has reached the 20-point mark in four of the last six seasons while adding ample physical play.

Handed a hefty four-year, $19 million deal in the summer of 2022, Chiarot rewarded the Red Wings with five goals, 14 assists, and a minus-31 rating in 76 games last season. In other words, not great. On a more positive note, Chiarot posted 147 hits and 164 blocked shots, and the plus-minus rating should improve as the team plays a bit better, so all hope is not lost. Chiarot is never going to add much offensively, so he's only a fantasy option for those that are desperate for hits and blocks in the late rounds.
Chiarot was arguably the most sought-after defender available at last year's trade deadline, ultimately being dealt from Montreal to Florida for a prospect and a pair of high draft picks, including a first-rounder. Postseason included, Chiarot played 30 games with the Panthers, posting two goals and nine points. He then signed a four-year, $19 million deal with the Red Wings as a free agent this summer. There's little here to get excited about from a fantasy perspective, outside of Chiarot being a cheap source of hits and blocks in the final rounds of your draft.
Chiarot's first year as a Canadien couldn't have gone much better, as he had a career-high 21 points in 69 games. He was fueled by a 6.9 percent shooting rate, the best of his career, which means he's likely due for some regression. That slide may not be as bad as expected if he retains a top-pairing role alongside Shea Weber. Even better for fantasy managers -- Chiarot had 152 hits and 128 blocked shots, so he can make up for any dip in scoring with solid defensive metrics. He'll be available late even in deep drafts, but he's worth a look given his usage and the chance the Canadiens improve as a team in 2020-21.
Following a 2018-19 campaign in which he set career highs in goals (five), assists (15) and shots (111), Chiarot cashed in with a three-year, $10.5 million deal from Montreal. The 27-year-old blueliner figures to continue logging upwards of 19 minutes per game, which will set him up to reach the 20-point mark again this season, though he almost certainly won't be seeing any time with the man advantage, which limits his fantasy value.
Late last season, when the injury bug stung both Dmitry Kulikov and Toby Enstrom, the Jets deployed Chiarot as a reinforcement on the blue line. There was little use for his three assists over 16 playoff games in the fantasy arena but the left shooter solidified his reputation as a no-frills penalty-killer and steady sidekick to more established blueliners like Dustin Byfuglien and Tyler Myers. Fresh off a career-high 12 assists, 14 points and plus-15 rating over 57 regular-season contests, Chiarot is trending in a favorable direction and thus deserves consideration in the final rounds of deep fantasy drafts.
Last year, with the Jets facing a rash of injuries and Jacob Trouba’s lengthy holdout, Chiarot logged 59 games for a mere 12 points. Now that Winnipeg’s blue line is healthy and has young players like Josh Morrissey and Julian Melchiori assuming expanded roles, Chiarot figures to be watching from the press box on a regular basis. Of course, even if he makes a case to be in the lineup on a given night, the hulking defenseman’s limited offensive contributions make him a bottom-end fantasy option even in the deepest of leagues.
Skating with AHL St. John’s for his third consecutive season in 2013-14, Chiarot totaled a career-high 20 points and 96 PIM, and finished with a plus-29 rating for the Calder Cup runners-up. He parlayed this strong performance into his first taste of NHL action, appearing in one game for the Jets. The 23-year-old Chiarot doesn’t have as high of a ceiling as some of the Jets’ other defensemen prospects, but his ample experience in the minors probably ranks him high on the team’s shortlist of potential call-ups. But if he does earn a long-term stay in Winnipeg, he'll be destined for light minutes on the third pairing.

Chiarot might be able to return from an upper-body injury before the All-Star break, though he might benefit from the extra time off, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Chiarot has already been ruled out against the Stars on Tuesday, leaving him just three more potential return dates before the All-Star break. Considering the defenseman has only one goal and four assists in his last 23 outings, few fantasy players are likely to be impacted by his potential return.
