Spurns NHL offer

Slepyshev signed a two-year contract extension with CSKA Moscow on Thursday, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.
ANALYSIS
Previous reports indicated the Oilers had made an offer to Slepyshev in the hope of convincing him to return to North America, but it appears the 25-year-old winger is content to stay in the KHL. While there is always a chance, this likely will close the door on the Russian ever making his way back to the NHL, though Edmonton will continue to hold his rights should he be tempted to make the move.

Despite increased expectations heading into the 2017-18 campaign, Slepyshev barely logged any additional games (50) and managed just two more points than the previous year. Selected in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft, the Russian winger was highly regarded for his size, speed and hands, but thus far has failed to impress team brass. Given his disappointing first two season -- when compared to expectations -- the 24-year-old restricted free agent will likely be handed a short-term "prove it" deal ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, although fantasy owners will want to be weary of the potential for him to opt for a return to the KHL.
Slepyshev bounced between the NHL and AHL last season, netting 10 points in 41 contests for Edmonton and the same number of points in just nine games with the organization's minor-league affiliate in Bakersfield. A 23-year-old Russian with NHL-relevant size and speed, he has a chance to see much-increased minutes in 2017-18 with the Oilers looking for an answer at right wing on the second line, but he'll need to improve upon his lackluster own-zone play and show more willingness to do the dirty work in the corners. His modest pedigree as a 2013 third-round pick won't prevent him from getting leapfrogged on the depth chart if his performance isn't up to par for an Edmonton team that expects to be a serious contender again this season.
Slepyshev, the Oilers' third-round pick in 2013, tallied 15 goals and 25 points over 58 games for Ufa Salavat Yulayev of the KHL last season. He'll face an uphill battle to make the Oilers' roster out of training camp, but at 21 years old, he gives the team yet another talented forward with some upside.
