Loktionov was released from his PTO with the Kings on Wednesday, Jon Rosen of Fox Sports West reports.
ANALYSIS
Originally the Kings' 2008 fifth-round (123rd overall) draft choice, Loktionov has appeared in 155 NHL games for the Kings, Devils and Hurricanes, contributing a modest 48 points (22 goals, 26 assists) and 22 PIM. His failure to reunite with the team that drafted him makes it worth wondering whether he'll be able to find work elsewhere at hockey's highest level. Besides, he hasn't played in the NHL since 2013-14 with the Hurricanes, and his last three campaigns have been spent in the comforts of his native country with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv of Russia's KHL.

Following an early-season trade from Los Angeles, Loktionov showed flashes of tremendous skill surrounded by periods of inconsistency. Like most of his New Jersey teammates, Loktionov struggled in the season's final month but he has a the chance to put together a solid season. He has more skill than most depth forwards and a good start to the season could see him earn a larger role offensively. Loktionov is a player worth remembering in the later rounds of deeper leagues and can be a savvy waiver wire pick-up if he starts to find his name on the scoresheet more often.
Loktionov really struggled to find his scoring touch for Manchester in the AHL (five goals and 15 assists in 32 games) and never seemed to get settled in with the Kings, either, sniping just three goals in 39 games. He's got a quick release and skates well, but doesn't quite have the game to grab a top-six role or the grit necessary for a bottom-six role. He's still just 22 years old, but it's unclear where he may fit in with the Kings.
Loktionov had another season cut short with a shoulder injury that required surgery. He put up nice numbers (31 points in 34 games) with the Monarchs in the AHL in addition to his short stint with the Kings. The Kings want to keep him at center, so the offseason acquisition of Mike Richards will help them resist the urge of finding a spot for Loktionov. Expect him to start the season centering the top line at Manchester though he likely will be among the last cuts in training camp. He needs to add some bulk if he wants to take the next step forward.
Loktionov was limited to just 29 games in the AHL after suffering a shoulder injury while making his NHL debut. He's been a solid producer in stops at the OHL and AHL but is more of an assist guy than a sniper. He's a nice talent but expect the Kings to give the 20-year old another season to work on his game at the AHL level.
