Thelen was assigned to Houston of the AHL.
ANALYSIS
Not a surprise here as he didn't have a great shot to make the NHL roster. The Wild want to see how he'll play in the AHL after showing some promise late last season (21 points in 53 games for Vancouver in the Western Hockey League) after a mostly disappointing minor league career.

Thelen has largely disappointed since being drafted 12th overall in the 2004 NHL draft. He'll likely only see time if injuries strike Minnesota hard during the season.
Once a top prospect as the 12th overall pick in the 2004 draft, his star has dimmed with poor play in the minors. But the Wild brought him back after showing some scoring touch late last year while with Vancouver in the WHL (21 points in 57 games). With the Wild lacking scoring from the blue line, he could be a factor if injuries strike.
Just like most defensemen on this list, Thelen has fantastic offensive upside. He played two seasons at Michigan State and then left to play with Prince Albert of the WHL last season. Thelen is big and mobile and should man the Minnesota power play one day. He should begin the year in the AHL with Houston.
