ANALYSIS
"It's not an easy decision when you've been doing something you love since you're 3 years old," Marchant said. "But I'm fortunate that I'm healthy and retiring on my own terms." Marchant walks away from the game as a versatile centerman who was defensively responsible as well. He amassed 498 points (186 G, 312 A) in 1,195 contests between the Rangers, Oilers, Blue Jackets and Ducks.

Marchant is a versatile player who once scored more than 30 points with the Oilers. He notched 60 points (20G 40A) in 2002-03, a career high for him. Now, with the Ducks, he figures to be a center on a checking line that can fill in other places in case of injury. He will get the job done for the team, but he shouldn't be expected to score more than 20 points in 2010-11.
Marchant had a screw inserted into his foot in early June. He should be fully recovered before camp opens. Marchant is the defintion of a defensive forward. He's good in his own zone and someone you trust to win a faceoff late in the game. His offensive production is limited at best and he shouldn't be on anyone's fantasy radar.
Marchant has failed to break the 25-point mark during his first three season in Anaheim. Given that he's got no real chance of skating along with the team's top-six forwards, you'll want to look elsewhere in the endgame for a potential dart this season. At 35, his value comes more in the form of locker room leadership than on-ice production.
Marchant has not been a good fantasy player since the 2002-03 season when he was playing for the Oilers. That season, he posted 60 points (20 goals and 40 assists) in 77 games -- when he was facing free agency the following summer. Given that he's not in another contract year and that he'll be playing mostly on the third and fourth line for the Ducks, do not expect him to turn it around. He's a safe bet for the usual 25-30 points.
Marchant had a decent 2005-06 as the Ducks' third center, scoring 34 points in 81 games split between Anaheim and Columbus. His best years seem behind him, however, so don't expect much more than 30 points from him this season.
Coming off a 60-point season with the Oilers in 2002-03, Marchant signed as a free agent with the Blue Jackets to be their #2 center behind Andrew Cassels. He flopped in the role, scoring just 34 points in 2003-04. With Cassels gone (to the Capitals) some might project Marchant to move up the depth chart as the #1 center, but we just don't see it. His big year with Edmonton was a fluke. Marchant is a great defensive forward who'll chip in 10-15 goals and 35-40 points, nothing more.
