Maltby had just 11 points in 78 games last season, while he won't fill more than a fourth-line role this season at age 36. Look elsewhere in the endgame to fill out your squad.
Maltby will add depth for the Wings as a fourth liner, while providing energy and a physical presence with limited opportunities at the offensive end this season.
He makes his dough as a tireless checker and pest, something that's really important to the Red Wings and not so important to the fantasy hockey public. Unless you're stuck for a short-night fill-in, you can let Maltby slide on by.
He lost 22 points and 33 plus-minus points last year, not that you wanted to take this "grind line" veteran in the first place. He's in the mix to throw his body around and check the opposing top line, not to score himself.
A hustler and grinder with an endless motor, Maltby is a joy to watch if you enjoy checking hockey. He's never going to score more than 20-30 points a year, though, so in most pools he's the type of guy you never bother drafting.
