While there's something to be said for having 148 games of NHL experience under your belt at just 22 years of age, Malgin hasn't exactly stood out over that sample with just 48 points and a minus-11 rating. He'll be utilized in a bottom-six role to begin the season, and the 5-foot-9 forward will have a difficult time climbing the depth chart given the pedestrian production he's offered thus far. Time is on Malgin's side, but there's a good chance he won't end up amounting to anything more than a role player.
In his second NHL campaign, Malgin took another step forward in his development, totaling 11 goals and 22 points in 51 contests. Selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, the 5-foot-9 forward has already proven to be a solid asset at the NHL level. Of his 22 points, six came on the man advantage, where he'll likely contribute in a small role again this season. Malgin should slot into a bottom-six role in the near term, but with Florida's solid depth on the wings he should produce at a decent clip with talented linemates.
A speedy Swiss forward who’s only 20 years old, Malgin appeared in 47 games for the Panthers in his rookie season, scoring six goals and 10 points in limited ice time (11:14 per game), though eight of those points came in the first two months of the campaign. It wasn't a particularly difficult adjustment to the NHL for Malgin, who had played in Switzerland’s top professional league for two seasons before moving to North America, but at 5-foot-9, 177 pounds, he was sometimes overwhelmed by the size and strength of NHL opponents. The Panthers used Malgin at center on occasion, but at this stage of his career, he’s probably better suited to duty on the wing. If he can stay in the lineup, he should be able to provide some depth scoring, and it’s certainly not inconceivable that the skilled winger might crack Florida’s top-six ranks if everything falls out right.
