Leipsic inked a two-year contract with CSKA Moscow (KHL) on Friday, Sport-Express.ru reports.
ANALYSIS
Leipsic -- who was released by the Capitals in May -- will make his first foray into European hockey. Given the circumstances surrounding his release, even a strong two years in Russia likely won't be enough for the winger to return to the NHL. He may end up finishing his professional career overseas.

A slick, undersized winger, Leipsic has posted some strong scoring totals in the AHL, but has yet to find a way to translate his skills to the next level, scoring just seven goals and 23 points in 62 games last season split between the Kings and Canucks. The 25-year-old has also had some trouble staying healthy, a situation that helps fuel the notion that he just might not be able to handle the rigors of the NHL. Leipsic is now on his fifth team in five seasons after signing a one-year deal with the Capitals this offseason, and he'll head into camp competing for a depth spot on the wing.
The shifty winger is on his third NHL team in three seasons but has the opportunity to stick around for the full schedule on a Vancouver club looking for scorers. Leipsic impressed with nine points in 14 games with the Canucks last season in a top-six role, averaging 17 minutes per game, but consistency was an issue and so was his defensive play, as evidenced by a minus-3 rating. Because Leipsic will need to pass through waivers to go to the AHL, the Canucks will give him a long look to see if he can be a permanent top-six winger. If he wins the job, he's in line for a career season, but if he can't win the job, he'll most likely stick with the team as an extra forward, which severely caps his offensive ceiling and fantasy value.
Leipsic’s only 23 years old and just played above a point-per-game pace in the AHL, so he could make some noise if he’s able to stick with the big club in Vegas after failing to earn a call-up with the Maple Leafs last year. Climbing the depth chart should be easier given the Golden Knights’ lack of elite young forwards compared to those in Toronto, but Leipsic’s far from a proven commodity. Still, he’s worth keeping an eye on if he can crack the roster in camp.
