Samuelsson, one of the Coyotes' better prospects, had a nice debut in the AHL with Portland last season, scoring 18 goals and 40 points in 68 games. He briefly saw time with the Coyotes last year as well, and should compete for a spot on the NHL roster in training camp. It's likely that he'll need another season of development time in the minors before coming up for good.
Samuelsson is coming off a great season with Edmonton in the WHL and will be given a chance at competing for a roster spot with the big club. He recorded 35 goals and 95 points with 97 PIM in 65 games last season, showing a mix of skill and grit that is valuable in real life and fantasy. Ideally, he would find his way into the top six for the Coyotes if they decide to keep him out of camp, but the odds are probably against that happening this year. Once it does, Samuelsson has the kind of game that makes him worth tracking.
Samuelsson is one of several young Coyotes who will have a shot to make an impact with the team this year. General manager Don Maloney wants to create an offensive buzz around the team and the Arizona-born son of the great Ulf scored 80 points in 69 games in the WHL last season. Watch him in camp -- he might surprise.
Samuelsson, the 27th overall pick in the 2012 draft, grew up playing desert hockey and the Coyotes seem to be a natural fit for the gritty center. While it'll likely take a few years of seasoning before he cracks the NHL roster, Ulf's son is one to keep an eye on down the road.
