Alexander Sulzer: (Concussion) Signs With German Team
DBuffalo Sabres  Free Agent
Concussion
May 1, 2014
Sulzer (concussion) has signed a five-year contract with German club Kolner Haie, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Set to become a free agent this summer, Sulzer elected to leave the NHL after playing 57 games with the Sabres over the last three seasons. He had his 2013-14 campaign cut short by a concussion suffered March 13, and indicated last month that he was still experiencing headaches. Sulzer, a native of Germany, will presumably be ready to play when Kolner Haie's season kicks off.

Sulzer reached unrestricted free agency in the offseason, only to re-sign with the Sabres just days later. He posted four points in 17 games last season before knee surgery ended his season. Be all accounts, he should be ready to reclaim a depth role on the Sabres’ blue line when training camp kicks off. He’s shown little in the way of offense in his NHL career to date, so he doesn’t project to be of much value to fantasy leaguers.
Sulzer seemed like a spare part in the deal that brought Cody Hodgson to Buffalo, but he played a significant role down the stretch for the injury-riddled Sabres, putting up eight points in 15 games. His performance earned him a one-year deal, and he could play alongside countryman Christian Ehrhoff in this season. An increased role is unlikely to translate more production, but the Sabres could use a strong year from Sulzer to boost their playoff push.
Sulzer is a fringe NHLer who spent time with Florida and Nashville during the 2010-11 season, totaling five points (1 G, 4 A) in 30 appearances. The German defenseman was signed to a two-way deal by Vancouver this summer to give the team added depth on the blue line. He's considered a long shot to play a significant role with the Canucks.
Sulzer was a frequent callup by the Preds last season, as the team summoned him from AHL Milwaukee on several occasions whenever one of their top six defensemen went down with an injury. And with good reason, too. Sulzer is a solid defenseman, who combines a physical presence on the ice with some good offensive skills. He is a very good skater with remarkable stamina. His fine positional play and a strong shot from the blue line make him a good all around defender. Unfortunately, he is not counted on for his offensive skills, and this doesn't translate into much fantasy value.
Sulzer played two games in the NHL last season, and with the logjam the Predators have at the blue line, he isn't likely to get much playing time this season. Sulzer might even end up spending some time in the AHL just to allow him a chance get more ice time. At the NHL level, there is just too much talent ahead of him for him to make a splash.
