Syvret registered 46 points (nine goals) in 76 games with AHL Hartford last season. The 5-foot-11 29-year-old has been a career minor-leaguer up until this point. Syvret, a former third-round pick of Edmonton in 2005, has seven points and 30 penalty minutes in 59 NHL games over the course of the last nine seasons.
Acquired from the Flyers this summer in exchange for veteran forward Kris Newbury, Syvret joins an already crowded Rangers blue line. While likely to start the season with the Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, Syvret does have some familiarity with some of the organization's important core defensemen. The 28-year-old former Junior hockey teammate of Dan Girardi's finished second in Adirondack Phantoms (AHL) scoring last season with six goals, 34 assists in 76 games. Syvret, at 5'11, 205-pounds, likens his play to another former Rangers fan favorite. “I’m more offensive than not,” was Syvret’s response when asked to describe himself as a player. “I like joining the play and sort of controlling the play, I like playing with the puck. I don’t know if there is a player I could compare myself with, but I try to play a little like Brian Leetch." The former third round pick (2005) of the Edmonton Oilers has tallied three goals, four assists through 59 career NHL games and provides more organization depth on the blue line than anything. He should not be on your radar at this time.
Syvret posted 42 points and 24 PIMs with Peoria (AHL) in the 2011-12 season while with the Blues organization. He’s been unable to translate those kind of numbers to the NHL, where he has managed seven points in 59 career games. Syvret is unlikely to play in the NHL with any regularity this season, but does have some offensive upside should he ever play a regular role.
Syvret is a but undersized, but makes up for it with good hockey sense on both ends of the ice and his strong skating. He'll likely start out the season in the AHL, but should have his name called a few times throughout the course of the season if/when injuries hit the Oilers.
Syvret will warrant a long look from the Oilers during training camp. He's a bit on the small side for a defenseman, but plays solid game on both ends of the ice. See how he progresses during preseason.
A solid blueline prospect for Edmonton. Needs to learn to shoot more if he wants to earn a regular shift in the NHL. Will likely reside in the AHL this year.
