Past Fantasy Outlooks
Fedorov was a huge pick up for the Caps after losing two of their veteran leaders for the season. He will continue to be a veteran leader and will likely serve as the third-line center in Washington with Nicklas Backstrom and Michael Nylander manning the Caps' top two lines. The 38-year-old center had 13 points in 18 regular-season games with Washington after being acquired. He did well playing with fellow Russians Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Viktor Kozlov. He is no longer the scoring threat he once was, but his skills are still there. He is a low-end fantasy option for the season.
His name still carries some weight, but his days of being a fantasy star are long behind him. Fedorov has scored just 30 goals in two seasons with Columbus, a number he surpassed in his one full season in Anaheim pre-lockout, and he even got shifted to defense at times last season when injuries had decimated the Blue Jackets’ blue line corps. He’s a very valuable presence on a young Columbus team given his experience, versatility and defensive prowess, but he can no longer be counted on for more than 40-45 points.
Fedorov had the worst fantasy season of his career last year, scoring just 44 points in 67 games. He'll have talented wingers in Columbus, but at this stage of his career he seems content to do the little things that don't show up on the scoresheet, and let the kids hog the spotlight.
Even though he's 35, Fedorov still has enough ammo left in the rifle to be a serious factor this season. True, the flying Russian had his lowest point total (31/34/65 in 80 games) since the 1999-2000 season, but the new rules -- in conjunction with Anaheim's up-tempo offense -- could mean 75-80 points are in the realm of possibility. What may also help Fedorov is if the Ducks decide to put Selanne on his line. Despite his drop in production in 2003-04, Fedorov still managed to lead the team in goals and points. With a new coach, some talented new faces surrounding him and a new offensive scheme, Fedorov just might have a rejuvenated bounce in his step this year.
