Gillies made a name for himself last season when he was suspended a couple of times for questionable hits against opposing players. That's what he brings to the game - toughness and the ability to police the ice. Assuming he can keep his aggressiveness in check, the Isles like the fact that he can "protect" all the young talent coming up through the lower ranks. Fantasy wise, if you're looking for penalty minutes he's probably a player you can grab late in your draft, The trouble is he doesn't add much scoring, the NHL seems to have a bulls eye on his chest, and the Islanders won't play him every game.

Gillies is expected to make the team from the get go this season. Why might you ask would a player with one assist in 14 career NHL games be expected to break camp with the big club? Because he also had 75 penalty minutes in those games.

Even if your league counts ONLY penalty minutes, he would still only be valuable to you if he makes the Carolina roster, which he almost certainly won't. At 29, he's no longer a prospect.

There's no secret that Gillies was brought into the organization to add toughness, a quality that is relatively thin on the parent club. Of course, Gillies will have plenty of work to do just in order to get to the Carolina roster; we figure he'll spend the year at Albany, with an occasional cup of coffee if he plays well on the farm.

Gilles brings little to the table other than penalty minutes (2,587 since '96-97). In just one NHL game, the 27-year old piled up more minutes in the penalty box (21), than he has career goals in the minors (12).
