Sawada has yet to see much success professionally after a semi-decorated collegiate career at Cornell. The Stars are ready to get an influx of scoring talent on the wings in the coming year or two, which will do nothing but slide Sawada further and further away from the NHL.
Sawada has shuttled back and forth from the minors and the NHL in recent years, and doesn't project as anything more than a depth forward following a decent college career at Cornell.
Sawada saw some brief time with Dallas last season, and figures to compete for a fourth line spot this preseason. He projects as a nice checker, with good size and decent skill, but he won't see time among the top two lines.
Sawada racked up nine points in 10 games in the AHL after finishing his collegiate season at Cornell last year. He could emerge as a depth player for Dallas at some point in 2008-09.
Drafted in the 2nd round in 2004, Sawada has been largely stagnant during his three years at Cornell University. There's nothing to suggest he's NHL material.
Will return for another season at Cornell University.
