Salvador (back) announced his retirement Wednesday in an article on The Players' Tribune.
ANALYSIS
Salvador skated 14 seasons in the NHL, recording 24 goals and 86 assists over 786 games. The 39-year-old spent his final eight years in the league with New Jersey, captaining the team for the last three seasons. Injuries dogged him later in his career, but his leadership and sound positional play from the blue line were attributes that outweighed his lack of offensive contributions. He'll remain in the New Jersey organization as an ambassador for the sport.

Various injuries limited the Devils’ captain to just 40 games one season ago but he should be ready for training camp despite a hip injury which hampered him late in the season. Salvador chipped in four points over those 40 games and is reaching the twilight of his career. Fantasy GMs should avoid as better options are likely widely available.
New Jersey's captain provides the Devils with leadership and a veteran presence on the blue line, albeit a presence that doesn't generate much offensively. Salvador will chip in occasionally to the team's scoring, but he's relied on to stop the opposition rather than create goals.
Salvador posted nine points, all assists, in 82 games during the regular season last year. But, following a highly productive playoffs that saw Salvador put up 14 points in 24 games, the Devils opted to keep the veteran around for another two seasons, re-signing him in July. It would be foolish to believe Salvador could keep up the pace he established in the playoffs during any regular season, so classify him as a defensive defenseman for all intents and purposes.
Salvador missed the entire 2010-2011 season with a concussion sustained in the preseason. He's due back this fall and will see ice time against the opposition's top forwards. Provided he plays a full slate of games, anywhere from 10-15 points can be expected from the veteran.
Salvador is a veteran journeyman who appeared in 79 games with the Devils last year, but topped out at 14 points. He sustained a concussion in the preseason and will begin the season on the long-term injured reserve.
Salvador won't light up the scoreboard but he has fit in nicely with the Devils' defense since being acquired from St. Louis at the trade deadline in 2008. He's a defensive defenseman in the purest sense and won't contribute much to the attack.
Salvador came to the Devils at the trade deadline and was re-signed back in July. He's a stay-at-home blueliner who won't do much damage offensively.
Missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, Salvador should once again be a regular d-man for the Blues this year. However, his job is that of a physical, stay-at-home defenseman and will not offer much by way of scoring potential. Would not look good on most fantasy rosters.
He won't get too many points, about ten. Yet, he should get about 70 penalty minutes.
