Van Ryn is in a real battle for a roster spot this season. The top four are set and he's not in them. We think he'll win a job but he's so very injury prone. So even if he does make it, you should avoid him. Talent will only get you so far.
Van Ryn showed offensive promise his first three years in the NHL. Now, he’s 29 and coming off yet another injury (wrist surgery). He’s apparently wailing on pucks, just like in the good old days. But the risk is just too high here for our liking.

Van Ryn has cemented himself as a top four defenseman with the Panthers. He averages about a point every other game, but increased his plus/minus and PIMs total last season. He's a good pickup late in fantasy drafts.
Van Ryn had a break-out year of sorts in 2003-04, posting 13/24/37, mainly because of his power play role. With the addition of Sean Hill, it's unclear what the Panthers will expect of Van Ryn. The obvious answer is better play in his own zone. The decreased minutes will probably adversely affect his numbers, so approach drafting Van Ryn with caution.
