Tuesday's NHL slate is a busy one, with 13 games on the docket after 7:00 PM Eastern time. Below, you'll find an overview of the matchups and suggested options for crafting an effective lineup.
SLATE PREVIEW
Much of the value in this slate resides in the Atlantic Division. The Bruins are primed for a huge day in New Jersey, the Sabres have struggled of late but will face the lowly Wild at home, and the Canadiens will be heavily favored in Columbus. The battle of bottom-feeders between the Senators and Red Wings also promises to provide some offensive fireworks, and there are some quality alternatives to be found among the multitude of other games.
GOALIES
Carey Price ($8,200) is living up to his lofty valuation in Montreal's net, with a 10-4-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .917 save percentage. He should keep rolling against a Blue Jackets team that's scoring only 2.37 goals per game — only the Red Wings (2.32) average fewer goals.
Tuukka Rask ($8,100) is the other elite option likely to earn heavy consideration besides Price. Boston's netminder has been even stingier than his Canadiens counterpart, as Rask sports a 2.14 GAA and .927 save percentage to go with his 8-2-2 record.
Whomever starts for the Avalanche in Calgary should be a nice value play at just $7,400. Philipp Grubauer (lower body) and Pavel Francouz (concussion) both have a chance to return from their respective injuries. If neither returns, one of Antoine Bibeau or Adam Werner would still be in position to find success against a Flames team that's scoring the third-fewest goals per game in the league at 2.52.
VALUE PLAYS/ONE-OFFS
If you feel good about some of the more affordable options below, saving money to pay up for Connor McDavid ($8,500) should pay dividends. He's been outscored by linemate Leon Draisaitl 43-40 overall this season, but McDavid has taken his game to a whole new level over the past four games. McDavid has two hat tricks and 13 points over that span, and San Jose's bottom-five defense is unlikely to slow him down.
Tyler Ennis ($3,800) is the only Senator with multiple power-play goals this season, and he has three. His effectiveness on the team's top power-play unit makes Ennis a great low-cost flier against a Red Wings club that's killing off a league-low 70.6 percent of its penalties.
Sticking in the Senators-Red Wings game, Anthony Mantha ($6,700) continues to lead Detroit across the board with 11 goals, 21 points and 80 shots. Someone needs to win this clash of teams in the bottom five among the league standings, and Mantha should stand out even more with his team facing a comparably bad opponent.
Tomas Tatar ($5,500) has emerged as Montreal's leading scorer with 20 points through 20 games. Seven of those points have come over an active four-game point streak, yet the Slovak winger remains surprisingly affordable against a Blue Jackets team that's been more generous than average defensively.
FORWARD LINE STACKS
Bruins at Devils
Patrice Bergeron (C - $6,900), David Pastrnak (W - $8,400), Brad Marchand (W - $7,700)
The most dominant line in hockey should be worth paying up for against a Devils team that's been outscored 66-49 through 19 games. If Bergeron (lower body) isn't ready to go, David Krejci ($5,100) would be a must-add in his place. Both wingers rank among the top five league-wide with 32 points apiece. Pastrnak leads the league with 17 goals, while Marchand's hot on his heels with 13.
Sabres vs. Wild
Jack Eichel (C - $7,500), Victor Olofsson (W - $4,900), Sam Reinhart (W - $5,800)
Eichel has potted five goals on 11 shots in his last two games. Olofsson has outplayed his modest valuation with a 7-7-14 line through 20 games, while Reinhart ranks second on the team in both goals (eight) and points (17). Eichel leads both categories with 13 goals and 24 points. Buffalo's top line should beat up on a Wild team that's surrendering 3.45 goals per game — eighth-most in the league.
Golden Knights vs. Maple Leafs
William Karlsson (C - $6,400), Jonathan Marchessault (W - $5,700), Reilly Smith (W - $5,400)
The reeling Maple Leafs have dropped five straight decisions, losing the last four in regulation while being outscored 20-11 in those four games. Vegas had been stuck in a funk of its own, but the Golden Knights turned things around in their last game by blowing the Flames out 6-0. The bang for the buck on this line is hard to ignore against Toronto's bottom-10 defense, especially given these players' recent results. Karlsson has multiple points in each of his last three games, with four goals and three assists over that span. Marchessault has a point in five straight and nine of 10, while Smith leads the team with 10 goals.
DEFENSEMEN
Shea Weber ($6,500) has a 4-4-8 line over an active six-game point streak, and Montreal's top blueliner is unlikely to slow down against the Blue Jackets.
Thomas Chabot ($5,400) is tied with Ennis for the team lead in power-play points with three, and the young blueliner finished one off Ottawa's lead with 16 power-play points last season. His proficiency with the extra man should shine through against Detroit's league-worst penalty kill.
The league's second-worst penalty kill belongs to the Canadiens at 71.9 percent. Zach Werenski ($5,100) is one of three Blue Jackets tied for the team lead with two power-play goals, and he's the only defenseman in that group, making him an enticing option against Montreal.
Radim Simek ($3,500) has built up a 1-2-3 line through six appearances with the Sharks this season. While he's likely to slow down, Simek could be a nice bargain bin option if you're saving up for expensive stars.
